A new vintage, second-hand and hand-crafted clothing store is having its grand opening on Oct. 11. in the Sohud, South Hudson neighborhood, of Columbus.
Ripped to Shreds located at 2503 Summit St. is set to feature the same distinctly rock’n’roll style as its parent brand Used Kids Records across the street.
Courtney Hall, store manager and creative director, explained the owner of Used Kids Records, Greg Hall (no relation) approached her with a collection of vintage t-shirts and conversion about her work with Rag’O’Roma a vintage and pre-loved clothing store.
“Greg the owner of Used Kids got a hold of me and was just like I heard you worked at Rag’O’Roma. I have some t-shirts, not really sure what to do with them,” Hall said. “I don’t know that it was fully like ‘Let’s open a store’ because we didn’t really know each other at that point. I don’t think that was Greg’s angle quite yet. But I do know that in the back of his mind he was sitting on ten years of rock’n’roll t-shirts.”
The idea of the store front evolved from multiple conversions about sourcing new and secondhand pieces to pair with those original shirts. Hall said it is important the store stands on the principles of sustainability and creativity.
“I’m looking for clothes that don’t die,” Hall explained. “I want pieces that feel like they’re either so versatile or they’re so unique that it’s something that you’re hopefully gonna wear until its ripped to shreds.”
Another way these principles will be able to come together in the store is through mending events and Runway Rewatches.
Hall explained it was obvious to incorporate mending into the store as a way of giving people the ability to learn to take care of their clothes, to reshape them to their style.
For the Runway Rewatches, Hall said they will be an opportunity to watch two to three different fashion shows with others interested in learning about fashion history.
“We will be watching some runway shows and they will be curated around some sort of theme,” Hall said. “The fashion conversion is so cyclical, it all comes back around and there is always something to look back to and be influenced by.”
In addition to the store’s regular hours, during the First Friday events hosted at Used Kids Records, Ripped to Shreds will host artist Pop-ups.
Not only will artists be featured in the store during Pop-ups, but local musicians and tour acts will have the ability to be guest curators in the store.
“The guest curator rack that is where we’re bringing local musicians, touring musicians, national acts to come into the store and pick things that speak to their personal style,” Hall said.
